David Sherry is artist in resident in Huntly from January to March 2010.
David Sherry's work explores the routines and thought patterns of every day life, looking at what is beyond the surface. His art works investigate normality, turning accepted experiences into visible rituals, rules and regulations and expose the psychological structures that dominate our lives and pull us towards the laws of convention where he searches for meaningful signals among the simple experience in life. His work is eminently approachable, engaging, masterfully humorous yet profoundly relevant to its place and time. His practice (both visual art and performance) has an unsettling, and frequently darkly humorous way of undermining the expected codes and structures of behaviour and social decorum.
During his time in Huntly David will be looking at Health and Safety issues and how they affect our lives. To start with he is meeting a myriad of people, janitors, business people, teachers and hoteliers, to find out what the issues are. He also undertook a Risk Assessment Course; he proudly passed the exam and can now take out his own risk assessments.
David's has set up an Out of Date Society, and is working on a number of other projects such as an A-Z of Health of Safety.
No doubt he will be bringing his unique style to an exploration of attitudes towards risk that will culminate in the Ill Fated Fête: a risk assessed event at the end of March.
David is accompanied by Anthony Schrag who has been awarded an RSA residency and will be with us in February 2010.
Katie Nicoll joins Deveron Arts as Shadow Producer for the project. Katie has recently produced Martin Boyce's exhibition No Reflections at the 2009 Venice Biennale.
