Paul Carter's two month residency in Huntly in the year 2000 culminated in an exhibition of two major works produced during the residency. Continuing Paul's thoughtful and humorous use of sci-fi imagery and religious motifs this exhibition was made up of two sculptural installations:
MESSIAH 1, a space-station whose purpose is the retrieval of the Messiah installed in the garden of the local Brander library, and CHAPEL BARBAROSSA, an installation in a roadside war-time 'pill-box' near Gartly (ca. 5 miles from Huntly) drawing on references from the film 'Close Encounters'.
MESSIAH 1 was constructed from Dexion shelving and a one-person tent, continuing Carter's investigation of low-tech materials in the pursuit of higher ideas.
CHAPEL BARBAROSSA revitalises the pill-box as a place of waiting through the installation of stained glass and the playing of the 5 notes which brought about extra-terrestrial communication in 'Close Encounters'.
