Umesh Maddanahalli is a performance artist from India who lived and worked in Huntly for three months in 2003. His project ‘Here to There’ focussed on the problem of an ageing community, for which he produced a major light performance and a video.
The residency depicted the problem of an ageing community in rural towns and resulted in a final project taking reference from the Bergman film ‘The Seventh Seal’ (a religious allegory addressing the most-contemplated question, ‘does God exist?’) for a light performance. The performance Here and There used dry ice, laser light and computer-generated sound; it incorporated dance and involved the audience in building up characters representing the generations of life and various aspects of life and death. The performance started in the dark, evolved into the light and returned into the dark.
Umesh is also a great Bollywood actor, cook and pool player. He delighted the community with a series of cookery performance events during his stay and developed an international pub pool team.
