Cinemagic Tour

Danish artist Elsebeth Jørgensen has been travelling round Europe photographing empty, closed down and converted cinemas. Cinemagic Tour is her long-term project, containing various research processes and presentations through montage-based artworks, public screening events, publications, webpage and exhibitions.

With the advent of the final demolition of Huntly’s Picture House in 2006, Elsebeth was invited here for three months to suggest a project looking through the optic of the town’s cinematic history. Huntly Palace/ Playhouse was once a space where people’s imaginings were produced out of a social activity in our community’s daily life. In her research she interviewed local people who had been connected to the cinema; found former staff from the picture house who got involved in her project; negotiated access to the soon-to-be demolished building; sought and received permission to bring out artefacts from the cinema for the local Museum; and organised a number of events relating to Huntly’s cinemagic past...
