Kenny Hunter was commissioned in 2005 by Deveron Arts Fellowship programmes, to produce a memorial sculpture for Huntly born writer George MacDonald in the centenary of the author’s death.
George MacDonald (1824-1905) was one of the most original of nineteenth century thinkers. His writing and lecturing brought him wide recognition in his own day, and into the company of many of the leading Victorians of the time. MacDonald's writing has an outstanding imaginative power, largely influenced by the German and English Romantics. It is in the realms of fantasy and children's literature, along with his visionary theology, that he has made his greatest contribution. Phantastes is recognised as a seminal classic of adult fantasy writing. His influence upon twentieth century literature has been far-reaching. The works of C. S. Lewis, G. K. Chesterton and W. H. Auden, in particular, bear witness to the power of MacDonald's imagination, a power which remains undiminished for the reader of today.
Inspiration for Where in? – Where at? is taken from the novel Lilith. This homage to MacDonald is now placed in the foyer of the Brander library.
